Italian authorities accuse OpenAI and ChatGPT of not respecting data security legislation. Access to artificial intelligence has therefore been blocked in the country.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE – Italy became, this Friday March 31, the first country in the world to block ChatGPT, the OpenAI conversational robot, for data security reasons. A decision that is not to the taste of all Italians, disappointed to be the only ones in the world no longer able to access the American tool.

While a company spokesperson confirmed to AFP that ChatGPT had indeed been “ disabled for users in Italy” in order to comply with the decision of the authorities, on social networks, many are surprised that they no longer have access to American AI.

“The real reason for the blocking of ChatGTP in Italy”laughs this user, with a screenshot of a question asked to the conversational tool: “Can I put pineapple on a pizza? “. Response from ChatGPT: ” Yes you can. It’s a question of taste. »

Others laugh at ChatGPT’s response when asked about Italian blocking. “I am sorry to hear that Italy has decided to ban access to artificial intelligence services like me for security reasons. I am not capable of actions that would compromise the security of data or users”justifies the conversational robot.

Some rebels are not ready to drop their favorite artificial intelligence and already let it be known that it is still possible to use it thanks to certain means.

In a little less than three weeks, Italians will probably be able to use ChatGPT again. The Italian Cnil, which criticizes OpenAI for not respecting European regulations on the processing of private information and for not having a system to verify the age of minor users, leaves ” 20 days “ company to comply with the law.

In case of breach, OpenAI risks a sanction “up to 20 million euros or up to 4% of annual worldwide turnover”the maximum provided for by the European Regulation on Personal Data (GDPR).
