Why the receipt will finally disappear only on August 1, after two postponements

It was scheduled for January 1, 2023, but had been postponed for the first time, a second… Finally, the end of the systematic printing of receipts will take place on August 1, according to a decree published on Saturday in the Official Journal.

This measure, taken in the name of ecology, was to take place last on April 1st but, at the end of March, the government, invoking the inflationary context, had again postponed the deadline, without immediately bringing forward a new date for its entry into force. vigor.

“The receipt is a benchmark for many French people”

“It’s a postponement, it does not at all call into question the validity of this common sense measure, which will be applied. It’s just that we have to be pragmatic, that we adapt in the context”, indicated last Sunday the cabinet of Olivia Grégoire, Minister Delegate for Trade. “When you have inflation at 15% on the shelves, when the receipt is a benchmark for many French people, it seemed important to us to keep this benchmark” the time to “pass the inflationary peak”, we added from same source.

Faced with the waltz in prices, especially in supermarkets, many consumers continue to frequently consult their receipt to check the details of their shopping.

Seven out of ten French people are reassured by the paper format

The results of an Opinionway study for Perifem (the federation representing mass distribution players on technical subjects) shared the same observation: if 73% of French people want the end of the till receipt, the overwhelming majority of the population is actually not ready. 90% of French people, according to the study, regularly check the details of purchases on their ticket when leaving stores, seven out of ten French people are reassured by the paper format… and still more than one in two French people accumulate tickets cash and bank card in his wallet.

The end of the systematic printing of receipts at the end of a commercial transaction – unless explicitly requested by the customer – stems from the “anti-waste and circular economy” law, passed in 2020.

30 billion tickets printed each year in France

The measure aims to reduce the production of waste, while nearly 30 billion tickets are printed each year in France, or 25 million trees cut down, 18 billion liters of water wasted and 60 million kilograms of CO2 emitted. Not to mention the presence of bisphenol A, an endocrine disruptor, in the tickets.

It also remains to be seen how the French will want to get their receipts dematerialized: two-thirds fear receiving unwanted promotions by giving their email to stores. In short, even on August 1 – when food inflation will probably not yet be behind us – the end of the receipt is likely to make waves.
