This sugar-replacing sweetener can break our DNA

A chemical in sucralose breaks down DNA and harms gut health, according to US researchers. A single daily drink containing this sweetener would be enough to exceed the threshold limit set by the European Food Safety Authority.

A new study shows that an artificial sweetener widely used around the world as a sugar substitute causes DNA damage. This is sucralose (E955) present in thousands of food products, beverages and pharmaceutical products (sold in France under the name Canderel) and whose sweetening power is approximately 600 times greater than that of sugar.

The researchers conducted several experiments in vitro, by exposing human blood cells on the one hand and human intestinal tissue on the other hand to sucralose-6-acetate, a chemical by-product formed during the digestion of the sweetener. This product is “genotoxic”, meaning that it breaks the DNA of cells exposed to it.

Sucralose and sucralose-6-acetate also cause “leaky gut”, which means that substances that would normally be eliminated from the body through the stool leak out of the intestine and are absorbed into the blood circulation. In addition, intestinal cells exposed to sucralose-6-acetate showed increased activity in genes related to oxidative stress, inflammation and carcinogenicity.

Avoid products containing sucralose

Traces of sucralose-6-acetate can be found in the raw sweetener, even before it is consumed. ” The European Food Safety Authority has set a threshold of toxicological concern for all genotoxic substances at 0.15 micrograms per person per day”says Susan Schiffman, the researcher and author of the study, who warns: ” Our work suggests that the traces of sucralose-6-acetate present in a single daily sucralose-sweetened drink exceed this threshold. I encourage people to avoid products containing sucralose “.
