the watch offers a must-have feature for people with diabetes

For years, we’ve been eagerly awaiting the addition of non-invasive blood sugar monitoring to smartwatches, and it’s Huawei that finally pulls the rug out from under Samsung and Apple with its upcoming Watch 4.

Huawei Watch Buds

In a recent post on Weibo, Richard Yu, Director of Consumer Unit at Huawei, shared a video showcasing the features of the Huawei Watch 4. Among them is a feature that will revolutionize the lives of people with diabetes. The clip shows a woman adding sugar to her coffee, then removes it when she receives an alert from her watch warning her of a risk of high blood sugar.

Apple is reportedly working on the same feature for the Apple Watch, as it would be very useful for insulin-dependent diabetics who have to measure their blood sugar levels several times a day. However, the development of such a sensor would have been delayed, and it will take several more years before the American manufacturer decides to add it to its watches.

Huawei Watch 4 will alert you if your sugar level is not normal

This hyperglycemia alert function distinguishes the Huawei Watch 4 from other connected watches already on the market, because it provides an early indication to diabeticsallowing them to take timely action.

However, it is important to note that the Huawei Watch 4 only provides no on-demand blood glucose readings like traditional testing methods. Rather, it relies on 10 health indicators in 60 seconds including heart rate and pulse wave characteristics, to assess the health status of the user. Huawei claims that this function was developed after monitoring and extensive testing of blood glucose data for 100,000 hours and aggregating 800,000 data.

As usual, Huawei also clarifies that the Huawei Watch 4 is not a medical device and that the information it provides is only indicative. It is also not recommended for type 1 diabetics, whose pancreas does not produce insulin, to use this technology, whereas type 2 diabetics, who are insulin resistant, may benefit.

Anyway, we’ll know more about the watch on next May 30, the day of its presentation in China. It now remains to be seen whether it will come to us. It is equipped witha 1.5-inch AMOLED screen and runs on HarmonyOS 3.1. We are also entitled to a three-day autonomy and fairly standard functionalities such as the measurement of oxygen in the blood and the electrocardiogram (ECG).
