Miami: Alcaraz doubly dethroned

After conceding the first round, Jannik Sinner was able to react to win against Carlos Alcaraz in the second semi-final of the Masters 1000 in Miami. The Spaniard, dethroned in Florida, will be overtaken by Novak Djokovic in the ATP rankings this Monday.

Jannik Sinner created the surprise this Friday in Miami. A few hours after Daniil Medvedev’s success against Karen Khachanov, the Italian managed to prevent the Masters 1000 final played in Florida from being a repeat of the one played on March 20 in Indian Wells. In effect, the 11th player in the world was played by Carlos Alcaraz, seeded number 1 in Miami. Jannik Sinner was the first to strike in the encounter, taking the Spaniard’s serve after a well-paced fourth game and the second break point. An advantage that the native of Murcia was however able to erase at the end of the seventh game before going ahead on the scoreboard at the gates of the decisive game. However, after missing a set point on his engagement, Carlos Alcaraz was unable to hold his face-off and found himself taken into an initially very balanced tiebreak. Everything changed when Jannik Sinner took a point on Carlos Alcaraz’s serve, who immediately replied.

Sinner did not let himself be dominated

Winning the next five, the Spaniard pocketed the first set after nearly 80 minutes of arm wrestling. Not shocked by this unfavorable scenario, Jannik Sinner started the second set strong, taking Carlos Alcaraz’s service straight away. However, the world number 1 raised his head with two break points in stride which were not successful. Nevertheless, the defending champion in Florida did not lose the thread and it was on the next engagement that he was able to come back to two games everywhere. If the exchanges were then balanced, it did not last long because Carlos Alcaraz had the opportunity to turn the match in his favor. In the eighth game, the Spaniard had two opportunities to take Jannik Sinner’s serve, which would have allowed him to serve in stride to win the match. However, the 11th player in the world was able to hold on, win his engagement and then make his opponent give in. Indeed, it was on a shutout that the Italian took Carlos Alcaraz’s serve before equalizing at one set everywhere on his first set point.

Alcaraz loses more than its title

The start of the last set closely resembled that of the second with Jannik Sinner taking the serve from the Spaniard. But, this time, the world number 1 was unable to react before the sixth game with a break point which was dismissed by the native of San Candido. In the aftermath, after a hung game, Jannik Sinner took Carlos Alcaraz’s service a second time, offering himself the opportunity to conclude on his serve. The first match point was enough for the number 10 seed in Miami (6-7, 6-4, 6-2 in 3h03 ‘), who takes his revenge for the Indian Wells semi-final. Two years after his first Masters 1000 final, already in Miami, Jannik Sinner will play a second against Daniil Medvedev this Sunday. For Carlos Alcaraz, this defeat has serious consequences for the ATP ranking. With the 640 points lost compared to last year, the Murcian will give Novak Djokovic the first place in the world he took two weeks ago after his title in California.
