Illinois man gets 50 years for killing his mother, stepfather, and hiding their bodies in truck

McHENRY COUNTY, Ill. (TCD) — A 37-year-old man will spend five decades behind bars for fatally beating his mother and stepfather in 2021 and hiding their bodies in a U-Haul truck.

The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday, May 23, that Maxim Parnov pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to 50 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

According to the State’s Attorney’s Office, on Nov. 30, 2021, Algonquin Police officers performed a welfare check at a home on the 400 block of La Fox River Driver after Peter Almen didn’t show up for work that day. Officers attempted but failed to make contact with Almen and his wife Elvira.

Police reportedly spoke with the couple’s son, Maxim Parnov, who resided in the home with them. The State’s Attorney’s Office said Parnov told officials he didn’t know where his mother and stepfather were and that he had been “arguing with Peter and Elvira in recent days.”

A neighbor reportedly captured surveillance footage that “showed male subjects transferring a large object into the back of a U-Haul truck.” When asked about the U-Haul truck, the State’s Attorney’s Office said Parnov told authorities he was moving furniture from the home, and four landscapers were helping him.

According to the State’s Attorney’s Office, on Dec. 1, 2021, authorities found the U-Haul truck in a rental facility parking lot and located Peter and Elvira Almen’s remains inside.

Police reportedly tried speaking with Parnov, but he “concealed his whereabouts and hid from law enforcement.” However, Parnov allegedly showed up at a friend’s house unexpectedly, and the friend notified officers.

The friend reportedly told officers that Parnov admitted he had “been fighting and arguing with his parents and that Parnov was asked to leave the residence.” Parnov allegedly told his friend that his parents had died, and he “did not know what to do, asked the friend how to sell his vehicle, and how to obtain a new identity.”

On Nov. 30, Parnov allegedly contacted another friend and confessed that he had fatally beaten his parents and needed assistance with burying them.

On Dec. 2, 2021, officials located Parnov and arrested him in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

An autopsy report determined the victims died due to multiple injuries caused by assault.

Parnov must serve all 50 years in prison and will not be eligible for parole.
