How to get to Kedarkantha

By car:

Sankuri is the starting point of the Kedarkantha trek. To get to Kedarkantha from Dehradun, you must first go to Sankuri. Sangkuri is about 200 (197) kilometers from Dehradun and the journey on this mountain road takes about 8 to 10 hours. To get to Kedarkantha from Dehradun, take a government bus leaving Mussoorie Bus Station at 8am. About 7 hours after the starting point, the bus leaves Sankuri.

If you miss the morning bus, you can also take the Hanol bus via Mussoorie.

According to the route this bus uses, you should get off at Mouri, from where you can book a private taxi to Sankuri.

By Rail:

From Delhi to Dehradun you can take the Nandadevi Express which departs at 23:50 and arrives in Dehradun at 5:40 in the morning. From Dehradun take a taxi or bus again to Sankuri.

By Air:

Take a flight from Delhi to Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. It takes about 1 hour to arrive. From here you can follow the steps above again.

Myths About Kedarkantha

The name of this place comes from ‘Kedar Khand’ which means ‘Shiva’s lot’. It is the historical name of the area. Kedarkantha literally means “Throat of Lord Shiva”. Legend has it that Lord Shiva once moved to Kedarnath after meditating at Kedarkantha.

According to Hindu mythology, Judah Ka Talab derives from the water droplets that fall from Lord Shiva’s hair. The lake (Talab), synonymous with his name, was formed where the water from Lord Shiva’s Pan (Judah) touched the ground.

His one of the attractions of this trek, the sacred summit of Swaragalohini, is said to be the stairway to heaven. It is believed that Yudi Citra climbed this sacred mountain with his dog to reach heaven.

Your journey to this beautiful place begins in Sankuri, about 197 km from Dehradun. It takes about 7 hours to drive from Dehradun to Sankuri. The journey follows a zigzag path against a backdrop of high mountains, passing through bubbling mountain rivers in the immediate vicinity. On the way, you will pass through Mussoorie, Damta, Nine Bagh village, Prora, Harsaadi, Natwad and reach the remote village of Sankuri.
