An AI creates a sculpture from the works of Michelangelo and Rodin

ART – A collaboration between sculptors who lived several centuries apart, it is possible thanks to artificial intelligence. The Impossible Statue combines the inimitable style of five famous artists: the Italian Michelangelo, the French Auguste Rodin, the German Kaethe Kollwitz, the Japanese Takamura Kotaro and the American Augusta Savage.

It is on display at the Stockholm Museum of Technology in Sweden and is part of an exhibition on artificial intelligence, as shown in the video at the top of the article. To create it, several AI models were trained from the works of the five sculptors.

The challenge was to combine the attributes of each – Rodin’s musculature work, Michelangelo’s off-balance poses – into a single sculpture. Once the plan was completed, the statue took shape using state-of-the-art machinery and technology.

The Swedish industrial engineering group Sandvik led this project to promote its know-how. More than twenty different design tools were needed to manufacture the stainless steel work.

From the top of his 1.5 meters and with his 500 kg, The Impossible Statue seems to suggest to museum visitors that with artificial intelligence, anything becomes possible.
