6 Uses of Tuna Oil to Stop Throwing It Away.

When you open a can of tuna, you tend to throw the oil down the drain.

Error !

And I would even say: double error.

First because it pollutes, and then because it’s a waste.

You know, I hate wasting food.

So I asked Marco, the Italian restaurateur in my village, how to reuse the oil from tuna.

He always has great ideas that are easy to put into practice. And then, he is an excellent cook.

Here are 6 recipes for using oil from preserves. Look :

Why should we avoid throwing oil in the sink?

It is true that it is a mechanical gesture: we open the box and pour the oil into the drain.

However, this is not a good idea.

Quite simply because this oil is not recyclable… like all edible oils for that matter.

As much as we don’t throw frying oil down the drain, we have no qualms about canned oil.

As a result, it mixes into the wastewater.

And once in the reprocessing plants, you have to use ultra-chemical products to disintegrate it.

Hello pollution!

Another argument is that this greasy solution can end up clogging the sink drains.

In this case, use this trick to naturally unclog the sink.

But the real question is not there… Why buy tuna in oil if it is to throw it away?

Personally, I prefer to reuse it. And here’s how:

1. A flavored vinaigrette

When you open a can of tuna, it’s often to prepare a salad.

And who says salad, says vinaigrette sauce.

So why not use this oil as a base for the preparation of the sauce?

Collect it and add a little finely chopped basil, rosemary, garlic, a little mustard, pepper and vinegar.

Mix vigorously and pour over your salad.

Simple, healthy and inexpensive!

You will tell us about it.

2. Pickle

A good marinade is really delicious.

Especially when the good weather arrives and we can take out the barbecue.

And to make a marinade, you need oil.

Marco gave me one of his recipes with tuna oil. There she is :

– 100 ml of oil (including the oil from the box + olive oil)

– 50 ml sherry vinegar

– 4 cloves of garlic

– 1 teaspoon of Espelette pepper

– 2 tablespoons of mustard

– salt, pepper (cumin and caper if you like)

Mix everything in a bowl and let stand for at least 1 hour.

Then, immerse the food to be marinated in it. They must be fully covered. Let them marinate for at least 1 night.

This recipe is perfect for prawns, cuttlefish, white fish and even chicken.

Yes, it may sound weird, but it’s excellent!

3. A sauce for seafood pasta

Mmmm Italian seafood pasta. What a treat !

And I can tell you that Marco is a specialist.

For this recipe, he has a secret ingredient…I’m sure you’ll guess!

Yes, it’s the oil from the cans of tuna (and/or sardines) that he recovers.

Brown fresh tomatoes, garlic, onions, tuna oil, bay leaf and Provençal herbs.

If desired, add a tablespoon of fresh cream.

Pour the sauce over your pasta and crumble the tuna on top.

A real treat for a 100% responsible dish.

And in addition it is good for your health thanks to Omega 3 and vitamin D.

4. Seasoning for pizza or bruschetta

Do you like to put a drizzle of chili oil on your pizza or bruschetta?

So, collect the oil from the can of tuna to prepare a flavored oil.

Season it according to your taste: lemon, olive, pepper, fine herbs, capers, dried tomatoes…

And hop ! In a bottle with a spout.

You can now put it on your pizzas.

5. A dip for happy hour

Dip raw vegetables in a good creamy sauce, we all love it as an aperitif.

And it would be a shame to buy this famous ready-made sauce at the supermarket.

Especially when you can prepare it yourself with healthy and inexpensive ingredients.

Mix the oil from the can of tuna in a Greek yogurt, a teaspoon of mayonnaise, a little lemon, fine herbs and Espelette pepper.

And it’s already ready!

All you have to do is have fun with friends.

6. An omega 3 cure for your cat

I don’t know about you, but my cat loves tuna.

It’s his cute sin.

When I open a box, he might pervert for some.

So, as much to link the useful to the pleasant.

So as not to throw away the oil from the tuna, I put a drizzle on his diet.

And it has 2 advantages.

The first is to please your cat.

The second is for his health.

Indeed, animals need regular cures of omega 3. It is beneficial for the beauty of their hair, to maintain or stimulate cognitive functions, for their eyes or during gestation periods.

There are food supplements based on omega 3 on the market…but when you have seen their price, you will prefer to recycle the oil from the tuna can.

How to store tuna oil?

As we have said, throwing away this oil is doubly stupid from an economic and ecological point of view.

You now know, thanks to Marco, how to use it in your recipes.

But you can’t use it all the time either.

This is where the question of its preservation arises.

For my part, I pour it into an empty jam jar that I can close with a lid. And I put it in the fridge.

What if I absolutely have to throw the oil away since I can’t pour it down the sink?

Just pour it into an empty bottle.

When the bottle is full, take it all to the recycling center in the container dedicated to used oils.

Your turn…
